植物を植える前に、ローズアーチを抜けて芝生に至る園路を作ることにしました。

The last job to be done before we start planting in the garden is the garden path that goes under the rose arch to the lawn.

家に向かって芝を横切る部分は、敷石を芝よりも少し低めにしたんですよ。
そうすることで、芝刈りの際に引っかからずに済みますからね。

The section nearest the bungalow crosses the lawn in a series of slabs let into the turf so that the mower passes over the top without difficulty.

園路の部分は黒いビニールシートを敷いて雑草を防いで、砂の下地の上に敷石を敷きました。
とても重かったわ、、、
敷石と敷石との間には細かい砂利を敷いたのだけど、散らばらないように敷石よりも少し低めにしました。

The central section was laid with black polythene to deter weed-growth, then a layer of sand to bed down the slabs. The gravel was put down loose over a thin layer of cement to stop it shifting.

アーチの下をくぐって我々の庭に入るんだけど、作った園路に合わせてラインを調整し直しました。　
こうして、いよいよこの園路は二つの庭をリンクして一つに繋がったのです。

The third section where it passes under the arch into our garden is old slabs which were re-sited to lie in line with the new path. The path now makes a cogent link between the two gardens.

そうそう。園路の両側をレンガタイプのエッジング材料で囲むようにしたんだわ。
こうすると園路がサポートされるし、砂利も飛び散りませんよね。
このとき、この両端の部分だけはセメントで固めていますよ。
そうすると後でガタガタせずに長い間園路の形が保てますからね。

The brick edging gives good support to the path and stops the gravel spilling onto the soil and the soil into the gravel. The bricks need to be cemented in.
